6. LOUIS AUSTIN4 BOORE (LOUIS3, LOUIS2, BOORE1) was born 13 Jan 1862 in Buffalo, N.Y.. He married MARGARET ANNA MCKINNON 02 Mar 1885 in Niagara Falls South, NY, daughter of ALEXANDER MCKINNON and MARGARET TOPPING. She was born 1866 in of, Niagara Falls, NY.

Notes for LOUIS AUSTIN BOORE:

Louis Austin BOORE, 23, gas manager, Buffalo, Niagara Falls NY, s/o Louis BOORE & Clara Eugenia STABLER, married Margaret Anna McKINNON, 19, Niagara Falls NY, same, d/o Alexander McKINNON & Margaret TOPPING, witn: Mary & Jessie THOMSON of Niagara Falls South, 2 March 1885 at Niagara Falls South

Lewis A. Boore received a collegiate education at St. Joseph's college, Buffalo, NY, and after completing his studies, learned the trade of gas engineer at the gas works in that city. He was employed by the Buffalo Gaslight Company until 1881, when he removed to Rochester, NY, as ticket agent on the B., N.Y. & P. railroad, until 1883, when he accepted the superintendency of the Niagara Falls Gaslight Company, of Niagara Falls, New York, in which position he continued until 1890, when he was elected secretary of the company (succeeding A.W.R. Henning). He has given close attention to the business of manufacturing illuminating gas, and is as well posted on the subject, perhaps, as any man in western New York.

In politics Mr. Boore is a Democrat, keeping well posted on current political issues, and giving his party a hearty support on nearly all questions. He is a member of Niagara Frontier Lodge, No. 132, Free and Accepted Masons; Genesee Commandery, No. 10, Knights Templar; and of Niagara Chapter, No. 200, Royal Arch Masons; and is very popular in Masonic circles, as he is with the general public.

_______

Boore, Lewis A., was born at Buffalo, N.Y., January 13, 1862, and is a son of Lewis Boore, who is superintendent of the Buffalo Gas Light Company. Mr. Boore was educated at St. Joseph's College, in Buffalo, and at the age of sixteen entered the office of his father, where he studied thoroughly all departments of the manufacture of gas. In 1881 he became ticket agent of the Buffalo, New York and Philadelphia Railroad Company at Rochester, and remained in that position for two years, when on October 1, 1883, he was made superintendent of the Niagara Falls Gas Light Company and was elected secretary of that company on June 11, 1890. Mr. Boore is also proprietor of the Tower Bazaar, which he purchased in 1893.

Notes on The Tower Hotel: In 1888, a two hundred and fifty (250) foot tall steel tower was built on the top of the Tower Hotel on River way on the American shore overlooking the American Falls near Prospect Point. The tower was fifty (50) feet square at its base. The tower which had several elevators and a seldom used stairway. It had three viewing platforms at differing heights. This was by far the tallest and most beautiful structure ever built in Niagara Falls until that time. The tower was a financial success.

Snow and ice kept collecting on the open steel frame of this tower and ice kept falling onto the skylight of the museum located next to the tower. The tower was subsequently dismantled and moved following a bitter court battle.

The Moose Tower at Prospect Point was moved to St. Louis and re-erected for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition. This tower was also used by Marconi to transmit one of the first wireless messages.

In the 1890s, electrochemistry energized the growth of the chemical enterprise.

A different type of cell was invented by Clinton P. Townsend, a chemist and patent attorney, and Elmer A. Sperry, an electrical engineer who later invented the gyroscope. Their cell consisted of a steel tank, the side of which served as the cathode, with graphite anodes in the center; a porous asbestos diaphragm separated the cathode and anode. In 1903, this cell came to the attention of Elon H. Hooker, an engineer who had recently launched a small venture capital firm. Hooker sent his older brother, a chemist named Albert, to evaluate the apparatus and was favorably impressed. In 1906 in Niagara Falls, NY, Hooker formed a company (soon to become Hooker Electro Chemical Co.) and built a plant to make caustic soda and bleaching powder using the Townsend cell.
