Eunice Avery born 1745 d/o Ichabod Avery/Mary Forsyth

Eunice Avery's mother Mary Forsyth (b. 1733) James Forsyth's aunt (b. 1738).  Mary's  parents were James Forsyth/Hannah Lester.

Thus, James Forsyth and Eunice Avery were 1st cousins.

Did James Forsyth marry his first cousin?

This Eunice's father, Ichabod died when she was 6 years old in 1751.  Her mother, Mary Avery (Forsyth) remarried the same year to John Bishop.  Did Eunice remove to Nova Scotia with them or did she stay in CT?  Mary and John Bishop moved to Nova Scotia in 1760.   Did Eunice get married and was it to James Forsyth, her first cousin?

Generation No. 1

1. EDWARD4 AVERY (JAMES3, JAMES2, CHRISTOPHER1) was born 20 Mar 1674/75 in Groton, Connecticut, and died 14 Apr 1759 in Groton, Connecticut. He married JOANNA ROSE 03 Jun 1699 in Preston, New London, CT, daughter of THOMAS ROSE and HANNAH ALLYN. She was born 1678 in Preston, New London, CT, and died 03 Jan 1761 in Groton, New London, CT.

Notes for EDWARD AVERY:

Edward Avery was on the list of freemen of Groton, 1708 and 1712; surveyor, 1707; surveyor and lister, 1713; surveyor, 1714; on the school committee, 1712. He lived in the northwest part of Groton, now Ledyard, on land that his father bought, Jan 6, 1694, of the heirs of John Coit. On March 18, 1728 James Avery deeded this land to his sons, Edward and Christopher. January 4, 1731, the sons divided tha land, Edward taking the west side adjoining the Thames River and Poquetannock Cove. Here he lived and died. He and his wife were in full communion with the church at Groton, before November 22, 1727. In 1724, he and his brother, Christopher, asked that North Groton be set off and they be allowed to have their own minister (Ecclesiastical Docs., Hartford, 3:218). They asked again in 1725. Lot No. 23, bounded on the west by the cove and on the east by the sea, was assigned to him in the division of common land, and later lot No. 60.

Edward Avery made his will Feb. 1, 1751-2; it was proved May 9, 1759. He called himself yoeman. He provided for his wife, Joanna, during her natural life. He mentioned that he had already given his son, Theophilus, lands and buildings, but further gave him "my Buccaneer Gunn Sword and Belt: my wearing Sword and Cand." Theophilus was to pay thirty pounds to Eunice, the daughter of his brother Ichabod. The testator stated that he had given to his beloved son, Asa, his homestead farm and buildings and improvements and bequeathed to him furniture, live stock, and money and made him executor. He ordered him to pay one hundred pounds to his son, Gideon, and thirty pounds to his granddau., Mary Avery. He gave to his dau., Hannah Pelton, forty pounds, and the same sum to his dau., Mary Pelton. He remembered his granddaughters, Joanna Allyn and Hannah Allyn, the first with fifteen pounds and the second with five pounds. His two granddaughters, Sarah Chapman and Deborah Stoddard, were each to have three pounds. The witnesses were Nathan Avery, Jacob Avery, and Samuel Hutchenson (New London Wills)

He was buried on his own farm. His wife and many of their descendants were buried on the same lot. His plainly lettered gravestone bears this inscription:

Mr. Edward Avery of Groton, who died March 14, 1759, aged 84 years and 24 days.

The age at time of death does not correspond to the date of death thus noted, but does agree with the date of death as recorded by Mr. Sweet, April 14, 1759. The wife, Joanna, died January 3, 1761, aged 82. His children who were born before the organization of the church in Groton were baptized in the First Church, New London.

Notes for JOANNA ROSE:

Edward married Joanna ROSE 1, 2, daughter of Capt. Thomas ROSE and Hannah ALLYN, on 4 Jun 1699 in Preston, New London Co., Connecticut. Joanna died 3 Jan 1761 in Groton, New London Co., Connecticut.

She was born Abt. 1714 in of Fort Griswold, New London, CT, and died 11 Jun 1773.

Notes for PARKE AVERY:

Parke Avery was called "Elder," because he separated from the "standing order" and preached every Sunday to the people of Groton in the "great room" in the Hive of the Averys. This room had been a part of the New London church building in which Pastor Blinman had held forth more than a hundred years before. He was one of the committee of inspection in 1775 to represent to the general court the necessity of fortifying Groton Heights. As a result Fort Griswold was built.

July 3, 1776, "An account of Ebr Ledyard, Esq. and Mr. park Avery, a committee who built the fort at Groton, laid in, examined and adjusted, and allowed therein the sum of 265 pounds 7 shillings 9d. in discharge thereof and voted that an order be drawn for that sum" (CT Col. Rec., 15:462).

He was deputy to the general court in 1776, during the long and anxious session that began with the approval of the declaration of independence and enacted laws for the protection of our interests (CT State Rec., 1:2, 61, 90). He was moderator of the town of Groton, 1780, 1781. He was too old to take the field in defense of his country, but he sent his six sons, two of whom died in battle. In 1779, he and his son, Parke, were both on a committee "to attend to the business of inoculation." He was constable and surveyor for Groton, 1748.

His wife, Mary, died June 11, 1773 at Groton. He married Grace Denison.

In his will, dated May 2, 1797, proved May 22, 1797, Parke Avery mentioned wife, Grace; sons, Parke, Ebenezer, Stephen, Simeon; grandsons, Cyrus and Jasper, sons of son Jasper, "who gave his life for his country;" daus., Abigail Niles, Dorothy Morgan, Eunice Morgan; granddaughter, "Elizabeth Avery, who lives with me" (Stonington Wills, 6:125).

Notes for ELISHA AVERY:

Elisha, private in Capt. Abel Spicer's company, May to Dec., 1775; killed at Fort Griswold, Sept. 6, 1781; captain (CT Men in Rev'n, 78:577)

East of the river on Groton Heights, a completed work, Fort Griswold, commanded the harbor and the surrounding countryside. It was somewhat square with projecting fortifications on two corners and a projection on the east side. A deep trench surrounded the fort on three sides. The lower walls were faced with stone and were topped with a barrier of cedar pickets projecting outward. Above this was an earthen wall with openings (embrasures) for cannon. A tunnel-like passageway (sally port) led to a covered ditch, which ended at a battery for cannon southwest of the fort. A V-shaped earthen mound protected the gate at the north end. Barracks for 300 men paralleled the innermost wall and the magazine was set into the southwest bastion near the flagpole. The fort was in good condition and the magazine was full in 1781.
